Raising Well Knoxville: Learning the Rules of the Road at Safety City

One of my favorite parts of homeschooling Alina-Dior is remembering that learning doesn’t always have to happen around our kitchen table.

Because Chris and I both have schedules that can look a little different from the traditional nine-to-five, we’ve been able to build Alina’s homeschool experience around moments that allow her to learn, explore and, just as importantly, be around other children. For episode three of Raising Well Knoxville, that looked like a family morning at Safety City Knoxville.

And this may officially be one of the cutest ways to learn about road safety. Check out this 45 second read.

A Little Knoxville Made Just for Kids

If you’ve never been, Safety City is essentially a child-sized version of Knoxville designed to give children hands-on experience with everyday safety. The miniature city has paved streets and sidewalks, working traffic lights, road signs and scaled-down buildings, creating a space where kids can learn about pedestrian, bicycle, vehicle and even fire safety in a way that feels much more like play than a lesson.

For Alina, we visited as part of a homeschool class with other children, which made the experience even sweeter.

One thing I’ve been intentional about as we navigate homeschooling is finding opportunities where she can learn alongside other kids. There is something different about hearing instructions together, waiting your turn, watching someone else try something first and then getting the confidence to do it yourself.

Safety City Gave us Exactly That...

Learning the Rules of the Road

After talking through some of the basics, it was time to put everything into practice.

We made our way around the mini streets of Knoxville, stopping at traffic lights, watching for signs and learning when to stop, when to go and how to safely move around other “drivers.”

It turned into one big conversation about the rules of the road.

Knoxville, Just Her Size

Why do we stop at a stop sign?
What does a red light mean?
Who gets to go first?
Why do we have to pay attention to the people around us?

They are simple lessons, but they are also the beginning of teaching our children awareness—not just of themselves, but of the community around them.

And at five years old, being able to physically do something while learning it makes all the difference.

Probably my favorite part was watching Alina make her way around all of the miniature places that felt familiar.

Safety City was created to resemble a tiny version of Knoxville, so as you move around the streets, you start spotting little landmarks and buildings inspired by the city around us.

There was something so fun about stopping along the way, pointing things out and watching her connect this little world with the Knoxville she knows.

It is one of those experiences that reminds me why I started Raising Well Knoxville in the first place.

Sometimes the best way to help our children feel connected to where they live is simply to let them experience it—from the museums and cafés to the parks, classes and unexpected little corners of the city that were created with them in mind.

Learning, Community & a Little Water Break

By the end of our ride through Safety City, we had practiced plenty of stopping and going, navigated our miniature Knoxville and soaked up some much-needed time around other homeschool families.

Then came the very necessary water break.

Water in hand, we sat for a minute, talked about everything Alina had done and already started making plans to come back.

Because that might be my biggest takeaway from this particular Raising Well Knoxville day: homeschooling doesn’t have to mean learning alone.

Safety lessons feel like play, which makes the experience easy for little ones to understand and remember.

Great for homeschool community

A sweet way to get out of the house, learn alongside other children and add a little social time into the homeschool week.

Worth a return visit
