When Comfort Isn’t Luxury—It’s Wellness: Why Flying First Class Changed the Way I Travel as a Mom

If someone had told me a few years ago that I’d be writing about the benefits of flying first class, I probably would have laughed.

Like many people, I always saw first class as something reserved for business executives or celebrities.. It felt like a luxury—something nice to have, but certainly not necessary.

Then I became a mom.

And somewhere between packing snacks, carrying backpacks, remembering passports, making sure Alina-Dior (and sometimes Chris) had used the bathroom before boarding, and trying to keep little hands entertained for hours, I realized something.

The biggest benefit of flying first class has very little to do with luxury.

It has everything to do with wellness!

Let’s talk about it.

True: Wellness is a luxury.

We Budget for the Vacation. But Do We Budget for Our Well-Being?

When we plan a family trip, we’re happy to spend money on experiences we’ll remember forever.

A beautiful hotel.
A once-in-a-lifetime excursion.
A special dinner overlooking the ocean.

Yet many of us will spend hours researching the cheapest possible flight—even if it means multiple layovers, cramped seating, little sleep, and arriving completely exhausted before the holiday has even begun.

I’ve started asking myself a different question:

What if protecting my energy is just as valuable as protecting my budget?

Because motherhood has taught me that my energy affects everyone around me.

Flying First Class Isn’t About the Seat

Yes, the seat is more comfortable. Yes, the extra space is nice. But for me, that’s never been the biggest benefit. It’s the feeling of arriving with something left to give. Less rushing. Less overstimulation. A quieter environment. A better chance of resting. A smoother boarding experience. A little more breathing room. Those things don’t just benefit me. They benefit my family too. When I arrive feeling calmer, I have more patience. When I’m more rested, I’m more present. When I’m less overwhelmed, I enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. As moms, we often carry the invisible mental load of travel. We’re keeping track of documents, medications, snacks, chargers, entertainment, schedules, and everyone else’s needs before we’ve even thought about our own. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our family is protecting the person carrying all of that.

DON'T SPEND BEYOND YOUR MEANS

lETS BE VERY CLEAR...
I want to be really clear. I don’t think anyone should stretch themselves financially or go into debt to fly first class. That’s not what this conversation is about. In fact, for many families, economy is absolutely the right choice. But I do think it’s worth challenging the idea that choosing comfort is somehow selfish. For some families, saving airline points throughout the year could make a first-class upgrade possible. For others, Premium Economy may offer the right balance. Some may choose to upgrade only the overnight flight or the longest leg of an international journey. And for others, it might simply become a long-term travel goal. The point isn’t that everyone should fly first class. The point is that wellness looks different for every family.
Maybe Wellness Isn’t Always Found in a Morning Routine

As women, we’re often told that wellness is about green smoothies, skincare routines, Pilates classes, and meditation. Those things absolutely have their place. But I’ve been wondering if wellness is also found in the choices that allow us to arrive feeling more like ourselves. Maybe wellness looks like booking the direct flight instead of the cheapest one with two connections. Maybe it looks like checking a suitcase instead of carrying everything through the airport. Maybe it looks like choosing a better flight time so your children can sleep. Maybe, if your season of life and your budget allow, it looks like flying first class. Not because it’s luxurious. Because it protects your capacity…

What I want Alina-Dior to Remember

One day, I don’t think my daughter will remember what cabin we sat in.

She probably won’t remember whether we had extra legroom or priority boarding.

What I hope she’ll remember is a mom who wasn’t too exhausted to enjoy the adventure with her.

A mom who laughed.

Who explored.

Who had the energy to make memories instead of spending the first day recovering from the journey.

That’s the kind of wellness I’m interested in.

The kind that allows us to be fully present.

Because sometimes comfort isn’t about indulgence.

Sometimes it’s an investment in how we show up for the people we love.

And maybe that’s the most valuable upgrade of all.

"I needed peace of mind throughout my pregnancy and the pandemic that I could still entertain, work and live a somewhat normal life. I knew one of the things that would help me was knowing that the air I was breathing didn't have a bunch of germs init that could effect me or my family and that's when I learnt about the Ionopure.
